A job safety analysis is a documented procedure that is put in place to review work steps and all hazards that could arise so that corrective measures can be identified to eliminate or reduce the risks of those hazards.

When the process of job safety analysis is conducted, each part of the job is assessed in detail, to enable the identification of the likely hazards. It thus becomes easier to know which steps to take to perform the job with little risk. There are certain steps involved in the job safety analysis process.

The first thing is to select a job to be analyzed. When choosing the job on which to do the analysis, you need to consider factors like the incident rate and severity, the possibility of critical injuries when conducting the job, and the age of that specific job process. Recently established jobs tend to have more incidents of injuries, considering the lack of experience.

You then need the job to be broken down into steps. Most jobs do not have too many steps involved. You need to list those steps in order. You then need a supervisor to observe the steps being performed under normal circumstances. They need to understand and be experienced in what is being observed fully. During the observation, you need to point out possible hazards. Do so in each step. To identify the hazards, think in terms of perspectives such as the possibility of a worker’s clothes or body being trapped in between objects, the danger posed by the tools, machines or equipment in use, the actions of the workers and the chance they may be dangerous, the chance of slips, trips, or falls happening, presence of too much noise or vibrations, and such. There is also the exposure of the workers to too much dust, gases, or vapor, or even being stressed from all that lifting, pushing, or pulling.

After such observations, you now need to point out safety measures. You can eliminate most of those hazards by coming up with a new way of running those procedures, modifying the existing processes, or shifting to using other equipment or tools. The aim here is to minimize the reach of the hazard as much as possible, if not to eliminate it entirely.

Where danger cannot be removed, there should be steps to avoid it as much as possible. Taking a proactive stand has led to more success and a safer work environment than waiting to respond to incidences. Therefore, coming up with an effective job safety analysis and implantation plan is a wise move. For more details, check it out!
